About Navdirshti
For a brief introduction on my background and taking up of ICO fellowship, I am a 30 year old Ophthalmologist from India, I did my post graduation in Ophthalmology from King George’s Medical College Lucknow, India and my fellowship in Vitreo-retina from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India and I am working in a charitable hospital, Sitapur Eye Hospital since July 2011 till date. My hospital is situated 450 Km from New Delhi, the capital of India.
This region where I practise is one of the most populous and backward in term of health facilities in North India. I am 6 years old in field of Ophthalmology and 3 years in field of retina, so I had some areas where I felt little bit short of experience like in managing advanced PVR and TRD in Diabetic patients. Since I am the only person taking care of Posterior segment in the hospital, I needed to discuss certain aspects of disease management with some experienced person, which I thought that ICO fellowship will be a great opportunity to not only see but also discuss with amongst the best in the world.
About My Mentor:
I cannot conclude my report without writing about my mentor Prof. Sussane Binder. She is one of the most dynamic and compassionate lady I have seen. I find myself very fortunate to be here and spent some time with her as I could not only discuss topics relating to ophthalmology with her but also about human resource development and developing systems for my place of work which would help me in future. I was able to discuss on almost every topic in which required a little help and clarification and got answers in all of them. Learning about the future trends in ophthalmology in the field of Stem cell and current pharmacotherapeutics was really great and gave an all together new perspective to me about my work.The most important aspect which I learned from her was how to manage my work with respect to time available, set up priorities and continuously work for the improvement in an organized and scientific approach.
Future Plans
ICO fellowship not only helped me in enhancing my skill but also helped me in my leader ship training and gave me a much broader picture about ophthalmology and its practise. Back home at my hospital, lot of work needs to be done, to name few amongst top of my list:
We are trying to develop a diabetic retinopathy screening project for our region and with the new insight and skilled acquired here, I think I am more confident in bringing up the project and managing different facets of it.
Our institute is a training center for young ophthalmologists and optometrists, I will like to introduce more scientific way of learning and try to evolve protocols which will cater to our local needs.
We have to be more scientific and organized in our approach and bring out the work which we have been doing in form of publications. To keep the co-operation with Prof Binder going and collaborate with her in our future endeavours.ses.
